As we enter into this new chapter of unpredictability, one thing that will continue to remain the same is the Ever’man commitment to supporting our local community.

The March/April community partners featured in our Eco-Friendly Bag Donation Program represent different facets of caring for our environment. For each reusable bag used in store, Ever’man donates five cents to a local or regional non-profit.

We wanted to give you a closer look at one of the organizations to show you how your contributions make a difference. We reached out to Keep Pensacola Beautiful to learn more about their mission, through an interview with Sigrid Solgard, Executive Director, and Madelyn Newton, Marketing and Communications from Keep Pensacola Beautiful.

1. How and when was KPB started?

Was there a specific instance that encouraged you to start the KPB Non-profit? "Keep Pensacola Beautiful was founded in 1978 and was officially chartered as a non-profit in 1979. It was started because of the growing problem of litter in the community and eventually joined up with Keep America Beautiful as a local affiliate to promote the mission of litter reduction, recycling education, and community beautification." – Sigrid Solgard, Executive Director

2. I see on your website that KPB has affiliates & programs. What does an organization need to do to become affiliated with KPB, and how are the programs created?

"Let's clarify: KPB is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, we do not have affiliates ourselves, but we have sister-affiliate organizations across the country! Our programs are created based on a mixture of what national programs and initiatives are offered, and the needs of the local Pensacola community! For example, the Great American Cleanup is a national initiative promoted by Keep America Beautiful. Still, we tailor the initiative by hosting events and community programming that fit with the needs here locally." – Sigrid Solgard, Executive Director

3. What is your favorite part about working for KPB?

"I love working for KPB! The workplace culture is very collaborative, creativity-focused, and encouraging. We're a small but mighty organization! Being on a smaller team means that there's some overlap in assignments and duties. From meetings to litter pick-up, it's nice having a diverse workday!" –Madelyn Newton, Marketing and Communications

4. How is KPB going to use the donation money that the non-profit receives?

"Donations received by KPB go directly towards funding our community programming and never goes to overhead! Donations help fund equipment for community cleanups, educational material for kids in k-6th grades, paint or other beautification supplies, landscaping material, or even large-scale beautification initiatives like a Harmony Park!" – Sigrid Solgard, Executive Director

5. As we are all staying close to home these days, do you have any suggestions or activities people can perform in their homes or neighborhoods?

"Yes! There are many things people can do. We're updating our social media with constant tips and tricks that apply to the COVID-19 outbreak. From using eco-friendly cleaning supplies to donation protocol for preventing the spread of COVID-19, we're trying to cover everything on the topic that pertains to our mission." – Madelyn Newton, Marketing and Communications

6. What is KPB's vision for our community?

7. Do you have any tips that our readers can use in their daily lives to help Keep Pensacola Beautiful?

"Don't litter! Be a friend to the community and pick up trash when you see it. Recycle properly! Understand Escambia's guidelines and try not to wish-cycle or contaminate your bins." – Madelyn Newton, Marketing and Communications

If gardening sounds intimidating or you don’t have the space, that doesn’t mean that growing and harvesting is out of reach for you. What if I told you that nutrient dense, fresh food could be grown in your kitchen without dirt, sunlight, or several weeks of waiting? Seed sprouting allows your kitchen to come alive with little effort or patience—no green thumb required!

Sprouting is the natural process of germination and subsequently putting out shoots by seeds, legumes, and grains. Sprouts can grow all year around as they do not require dirt, fertilizer, sunshine, or very much attention at all. Sprouts are also incredibly economical as one tablespoon of alfalfa seeds produces an entire quart of sprouted veggies!

The hard outer covering of seeds acts as a shield against the outside environment until conditions are right for growth, meaning the presence of water. Once in water, the focus shifts from protection to growth and this is when the nutrients become most available to us.

Seeds are little nutrition bombs packed with proteins, fiber, vitamins, and minerals but they don’t give up those nutrients readily. When the seed feels safe in an environment with water and comfortable temperatures, enzymes within the seed rise up to launch and accelerate growth processes. These enzymes make the nutrients within the seed more accessible and there are many nutrients to be had!

For example:

· Broccoli sprouts are high in sulforaphane, a potent cancer-fighting and antibacterial compound found in cruciferous vegetables and sprouts.

· Alfalfa sprouts are a good source of Vitamins C and K and B-Vitamins. They are also a source of saponins, which are said to help balance cholesterol and support the immune system

· Clover sprouts are a good source of isoflavones.

· Sunflower sprouts are high in protein, phytosterols, essential fatty acids and fiber.

· Lentil sprouts are an excellent source of protein and a delicious way to consume lentils.

Sprouts are actually more nutrient dense than their full grown counterpart but they only take 3-5 days to produce, pretty neat right? I bet you’re ready to get started. A sprouting kit including lids with fine, medium, and coarse sized holes is helpful. We sell kits and organic sprouting seeds, beans, grains, and mixes at Ever’man! However, you might have the supplies needed to get started right at home.

The supplies you’ll need:

· 32 oz wide mouth mason jar

· Perforated lids or covering such as cheesecloth with rubber band

· Seeds

· Water

· Bowl

(FYI--You can find all of these supplies at both Ever'man locations!)

Steps to delicious and nutritious sprouts:

  1. Measure the amount of seeds suggested for the type you’ve chosen and add to a 32 oz wide mouth jar. Add water in a ratio of 4 parts water to 1 part seeds.

  2. Cover the jar with a perforated lid or material such as cheesecloth secured with a rubber band.

  3. For most seeds, soak for 12-24 hours in dark place at room temperature.

  4. Rinse the seeds thoroughly until the water being poured off is clear.

  5. Prop jar at an angle with the screen top facing down to insure proper ventilation and drainage during sprouting. Seeds sprout best in a place away from direct light.

  6. Rinse the seeds twice a day for 3-5 days.

  7. When the seeds are fully sprouted, you can place the jar near a window for 1-2 days so the sprouts will develop chlorophyll and turn green.

  8. Store sprouts in the refrigerator with an airtight lid for up to 2 weeks.

Below is a table of some of the most commonly sprouted seeds and some of my personal favorites.

If these uncertain times have you feeling stressed or you’re starting to feel antsy at home, make a plan right now to make the most of these days. The hours could be spent becoming healthier, reaching a goal, learning something new, being productive, finding peace, getting stronger, nourishing relationships, etc. Choose to support your wellbeing! Move every hour—10 reps per hour

· Squats

· Pushups

· Jumping jacks

· Planks

· Lunges

Practice mindful eating

· Portion out snacks on a plate

· Ask yourself if you’re truly hungry or just thirsty/bored/stressed

· Eat distraction free to give your attention to adequate chewing & proper digestion

· Get connected to your food by trying a new recipe (You might have all you need for this one—Shakshuka with Spinach)

Learn something new

· Make bread

· Sprout seeds (blog post coming soon)

· Read a book (Rec: Food Fix by Dr. Mark Hyman)

· Search a topic of interest on YouTube (Here’s an idea—Regenerative Renegades)

· Do a puzzle

· Plant seeds

· Listen to a podcast

· Check out Ever’man upcoming LIVE educational videos

Minimize distractions

· Unsubscribe from irrelevant emails

· Get rid of unwanted physical clutter

· Delete apps that aren’t used

· Organize digital files

· Unfollow social media accounts that do not contribute to your mental and emotional wellbeing

· Achieve ‘inbox ZERO’

Support local businesses

· Leave a google review

· Like and comment on their social media posts

· Buy a giftcard

Create a healthy morning routine

· Wake up at the same time every day

· Stay off phone for first hour

· Drink water first thing

· Get outside for natural light in the morning

· Exercise

Call loved ones—video calls and texts too!

· Elderly family

· Extroverted friends

· Kids being homeschooled

Although COVID-19 is a less than encouraging topic, it does present a unique opportunity to devote time to those tasks and activities that get lost in the hustle of our normal lives. Create a plan for your new (temporary) normal and make the most of it! What have you been eager to do in or around your home? There’s no time, like a quaran-time!
