COVID-19 Update #2

Updated: Mar 17

To our members and neighbors,

Thank you for allowing us to serve you during these unprecedented times. We’d like to share an update on how our co-op is responding to the public health crisis out of abundance of caution and in accordance with recommendations from local, national and industry authorities.

We will continue to post major updates as separate posts, but will share daily briefing notes to keep you informed of how we are responding and to answer frequently asked questions as they come up.

Daily updates as of March 17, 2020:

  • Reminder: Membership is NOT required to shop the co-op. Please share this info with your friends and neighbors.

  • The entire store, including shopping cart handles and baskets, are on a routine of 3-4 rounds of sanitizing each day.

  • Our cafes are sanitizing and changing out serving spoons every 1-2 hours. Customer are encouraged to wash their hands before serving themselves at the hot and salad bars.

  • Our cafes will also be working to comply with the county mandate to reduce dine-in seating to 50% capacity and space tables 6 feet apart.

  • At this time, we are--unfortunately--unable to offer delivery or curbside pick up. If you are concerned about crowds, we encourage you to reach out to friends and families who can shop on your behalf.

  • We are working with our distributors to restock the shelves as diligently as possible.

  • Hand sanitizing supplies are limited--please wash your hands with soap and water in the restrooms whenever possible. The CDC recommends hand washing over hand sanitizing whenever possible.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to develop, please know your co-op is closely monitoring the situation and taking precautions for the health of our shoppers and staff. We are regularly checking for updates from local, state and national public health authorities to serve you better during this time.

Summary of Updates from March 16, 2020:

· We continue to add to our store sanitizing procedures for staff and surfaces, as well as providing supplies for our customers to wash their hands per CDC recommendations.

· We are doing our best to stock the shelves in the midst of supply chain disruptions.

· All classes are cancelled through the end of March.

Full Update from March 16, 2020:

IN STORE OPERATIONS

We have tripled the frequency of sanitizing routines throughout the stores. We are reminding employees to be vigilant about hand washing, reinforcing preventative hygiene measures and are asking anyone with cold or flu symptoms to stay home. Our managers and employees are ServSafe certified and we have added the following to our cleaning/sanitizing routines:

· Sanitizing shopping cart handles and baskets multiple times a day

· Sanitizing common touch points multiple times a day

· Increasing employee handwashing and sanitizing routines at the register and throughout the store

· Discontinuing our passive sampling programs

· Discontinuing bring your own containers for our bulk sections (single use, compostable bags available in bulk aisle—in addition to prepackaged bulk items.)

· Making gloves available for customers where needed

· Serving utensils in all cafe self-serve stations and scoops in the bulk dispensers are being sanitized multiple times a day

Please be advised that supplies of hand sanitizer wipes and gel are extremely limited. Please utilize our restroom sinks to wash your hands with soap when entering the co-op and leave hand sanitizing only for when you are unable to wash your hands. The CDC recommends proper hand washing techniques as the first line of defense against germs.

Our management team is working closely to monitor the health of our employees and encouraging any employees with cold or flu like symptoms to stay home.

SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTIONS

Due to unprecedented demand, we are seeing significant supply issues in key products such as meat, paper products, immune support supplements, etc. Please know that our team is working around the clock to stock the shelves to the best of our abilities. Many of our distributors and suppliers are feeling serious impacts of the sustained demand and these issues unfortunately trickle down to the store level.

Please be mindful when you are shopping and consider carefully the needs of your household. We continue to operate with our regular store hours, 7 days a week to be available to our community.

EDUCATIONAL CENTER

All classes at our Garden Street Educational Center are cancelled through the end of March. We look forward to creating some unique opportunities to connect with our teachers and students through social media over the coming weeks to foster community and educational opportunities while practicing social distancing.

HOW TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR

As you visit the co-op in the coming days and weeks, we encourage you to consider the following tips and guidelines from public health authorities:

· If you have any cold or flu like symptoms, stay at home and contact a health authority. Ask a healthy neighbor, friend or family member to make a grocery run on your behalf.

· Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap when you enter the co-op. Turn the facet and open the door with a paper towel, your elbow or foot whenever possible.

· Leave your bulk jars and bins at home. Use compostable bags instead.

· Try to maintain a 6 foot separation from staff and fellow shoppers. A hearty wave, big thumbs up or a bright “Hello!” will be welcome, but handshakes and other contact are discouraged.

· Consolidate your shopping trips, but avoid stockpiling more than what you need.

· Say an enthusiastic “Thank you!” to the co-op team you see working in the aisles and at the registers. They are doing a great job serving our community and we are grateful to have each other in these tough times.
